What is a Specialized Master’s Degree?

An MBA often comes to mind when people first think about pursuing a business-related graduate degree. However, emerging industries and evolving business functions have created a need for many types of management degrees. At Cornell, you will find plenty of exciting options for advancing your education.

Specialized Master’s Degrees vs. MBA Programs

A Master of Professional Studies (MPS) or Master of Science (MS) in a business-related field typically offers a focused curriculum in a specific business specialty, such as accounting or analytics.

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) often requires an undergraduate business degree and professional experience. The degree usually has a general management or business focus.

If you’ve been looking for an MBA alternative, consider if a specialized master’s program might be a better fit for your professional goals.

The Benefits of a STEM-Designated Master’s Degree

Leading and succeeding in today’s technology-driven business ecosystem takes specialized skills and knowledge. Earning a master’s degree from a STEM-designated program ensures that your education covers analytics, databases, programming, digital best practices, and other in-demand competencies.

But the benefits extend beyond a cutting-edge curriculum. International students with an F-1 visa enrolled in the MPS in Management or the MPS in Management – Accounting Specialization program become eligible for a two-year extension; this means they can work in the US in an approved STEM field for up to 36 months instead of 12. This additional time extends training opportunities and strengthens employment prospects
